The Issue
Traditionally developers have faced a difficult choice; to spend time building separate native applications for each device or design web applications that run on any mobile browser. Native applications such as those in the iTunes app store or Google Play are installed on the mobile device and offer the best end user experience. The ability to use complete device functionality and storage, work with a full offline capability and advanced security features lead to superior applications. However using current application design platforms native apps must be built separately for each mobile device, a painstaking use of time and resources.
HTML5 vs Native?
Web applications are accessed over the internet using a mobile browser; as such, once the application is designed, it can be deployed over a large spread of mobile devices. This is at the cost of app functionality for example, the ability to synchronize data, particularly when moving in and out of coverage.
Hybrid apps commonly use HTML5 code for the screen and basic description, but have an additional envelope of code that gives the app all of the features that HTML5 cannot do: take a GPS reading, read input from a barcode, have and manage a database. However, hybrid apps sacrifice the independence of being able just to work in just any browser; with users limited to the browser supported by the hybrid platform under specified operating systems, and often losing the capability of data synchronization.
